Guided city walk

On this city walk we see the magnificent ingenuity of the past in the mighty fortifications and cobble stone streets.

Experience Denmark's first capital
Nyborg and Nyborg Castle was founded in the late 12th century. The king needed a fortification on the significant and strategic location. From here he could control and rule Denmark. In the following centuries Nyborg was developed to become not only the most important fortification in Denmark, but the first capital of Denmark, residence of king and house of the medieval parliament (Danehof). On this walk we see the magnificent ingenuity of the past in the mighty fortifications. Ramparts and moats. We visit the city gate – the longest barrel gate in Denmark. On our way through the king’s city our guide takes us past the church, old cobble stone streets and merchants houses. There will be a knowledgeable guide who explains what we pass.

Add on
Book The King’s Pantry food truck and enjoy tales of the local history, accompanied with food tastings from that time period. It will also be possible to buy the historically conveyed products. Or make a stop at one of the old merchants houses for a tasting with other produce such as the famous rygeost (smoked cheese), which is one of only two cheese which originates from Denmark.

Fun fact
Denmark was in earlier days divided into counties owned by the king, the nobles or the church. When in debt the counties were traded among the owners, hence almost all of Denmark has from time to time been pawned. The only county that has never been pawned is Nyborg county. It has always been in possession of the ruling king. The county covered most of Fyn.
