Gourmet Route in Nyborg (41,1 km)

Your journey begins at Nyborg harbor, steps away from the town center, complete with a castle, church, charming cafes, and quaint shops. This was once a bustling hub where trains and ferries linked Denmark. Housed in the historic DSB railway workshops, Nyborg Distillery offers an unforgettable experience for all the senses whether you are into whisky, gin or just a delicious dinner.

Kongens Skibsbro

At Nyborg harbor, you'll find Kongens Skibsbro, built in 1548 by King Christian III for his grand arrivals to his residence city. Today, Kongens Skibsbro is still used as the royal docking point. On the quay, you'll see the "Forsavn" monument, honoring Nyborg sailors who perished in World War II.

Nyborg Distillery

Nyborg Distillery. The old DSB workshops formed the framework for DSB's train operation for 125 years. Here, dedicated workers kept Denmark moving. The building's raw, industrial atmosphere and rich history make it more than just a distillery. Enjoy tastings, a cafe, and a restaurant. We recommend you take a break and book a unique experience.

Train Ride to the Seaside

As you leave Nyborg, you'll pass through the Knudshoved neighborhood - an area created outside the border of the old city walls. Soon, you'll reach the coast and its popular beaches. In the past, people from all over Funen would take the train to these beaches, getting off at one of the many stops along the way. Now, it's just a short bike ride. Nyborg's beaches are known for their clean water, soft sand, and family-friendly atmosphere. The Blue Flags along the coast, means you're guaranteed a great and safe swim.

A Gourmet Experience

Nyborg has become a culinary destination, offering fantastic dining experiences. There are numerous excellent restaurants, and visitnyborg.dk can provide a complete list. One restaurant stands out: Lieffroy is often mentioned as a potential recipient of Funen's first Michelin star. Lieffroy is mentioned again and again as not only one of Funen's best, but probably one of Denmark's best French restaurants. Users have for years responded by rating it with top marks, and reviewers give it the predicate "worth traveling for". If you are into gourmet dining, then you should treat yourself by booking a table here. If you didn't manage to book a table at Restaurant Lieffroy, don't despair. The nearby beachfront hotels offer exceptional cuisine, frequently praised by food critics as well.

Strandhøj Park

Strandhøj Park is a huge park directly adjacent to the Great Belt. It's a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, offering plenty of space for relaxation and recreation. Enjoy a leisurely bike ride along the gravel paths or simply stroll hand-in-hand. It's a great place for families with picnics or couples seeking a romantic escape.

Fruit Orchards and Local Produce

Funen is known as Denmark's garden, and Nyborg is no exception. As you ride north, you'll discover a landscape dotted with orchards and fields bursting with seasonal produce. Here are apple orchards, blueberry plantations, beautiful chives fields, and roadside stalls selling everything from honey, eggs to seasonal fruits and vegetables. A short detour of a couple of kilometers from route 40 is, for example, Kildegaarden Highland Cattle. The farm shop offers gourmet meat, and you can, for example, buy delicious steaks and sausages, perfect for the grill. Stokkebye Vineyard offers a gourmet experience for those who appreciate the finer things in life. This vineyard specializes in top-quality wines and provides a stunning setting for its farm shop and events. Indulge in a tasting of sparkling wine and caviar. On your northbound bike ride, you've been enjoying coastal views and passing through farmland. The final stretch takes you past Risinge Manor. You can continue on to Kerteminde, which is only 7 km away. The route will take you a little inland and south again, as your gourmet adventure isn't over yet. First, though, you'll have to cycle south through a series of villages. Here, you'll find charming churches and idyllic village ponds when you're not cycling among the rolling cornfields. You can find more information about these experiences on visitnyborg.com. Outside Nyborg, you'll pass the manor Juelsberg and through the area where one of Denmark's most important battles was fought. Namely, the Battle of Nyborg in 1659, where Sweden was defeated by a Danish-Dutch army and was forced to retreat to Zealand. Before you reach Nyborg again, you'll pass one of Nyborg's most popular farm shops – Rosilde Højgaard. Rosilde Højgaard cultivates the lands of Holckenhavn Castle organically, and in the farm shop, you'll always find a wide selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables. In some of the fields in the area, you'll see sheep grazing. These are sheep from Hejlholts Uldspinderi (wool mill) south of Nyborg, which help to maintain Holckenhavn's fields so that the area can be cultivated and utilized as naturally as possible.

Back in Nyborg, it's time to enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine at one of the city's many cafes, wine bars, or restaurants. Enjoy!
